Central cause major upset in women’s hockey

CENTRAL women’s hockey team caused the upset of the tournament yesterday, defeating NCD ladies 1-0 in a tight encounter to share the lead at the top with NCD in the women’s competition.
It was captain Vagi Boga’s goal in the first half that caused the difference in the game to continue their winning run after defeating Eastern Highlands on Sunday in the opening match.
In another women’s encounter, Morobe thrashed Madang 4-0 in a one-sided affair.
NCD and Central are now leading the women’s competition with Morobe in the second spot followed by Eastern Highlands and Madang.
Meanwhile, in the men’s competition NCD bombed Madang 4-1 to stamp their dominance in the men’s category while Manus were too good walking over Central 2-0 in the game at the UPNG hockey grounds.
The women’s double header matches will be played today with Central taking on Manus and Madang, while NCD ladies will play the Eastern Highlands and Morobe before the start of the finals run tomorrow.
In the men’s category, competition pace setters NCD will take on Morobe and Madang, and Manus will play the Eastern Highlands.
The NCD men’s hockey team are all set to defend their title and are winning their matches comfortably.
But, after their women’s side went down to Central, it now put them in an awkward position to run home for their title defence.
