TEAM Central will finalise its athletic team after the final selection trials held at the Sir John Guise stadium yesterday.
Central province sports coordinator Henry Kavana told The National that athletic was one area Team Central had performed badly in at the last PNG Games.
With the trials now open to all Central athletes this should give selectors an opportunity to select the best possible athletics squad.
An invitation has been sent to all schools in the province but only four Mainohano (Kairuku), Kwikila, Iarowari and Ianom in Cloudy Bay responded to take part in the selection trials.
Kavana said during the provincial games in April some athletes have been identified and would represent Team Central at the upcoming PNG Games in Kimbe.
“We have already short-listed some athletes and pending the outcome of the schools’ selection trials yesterday, we should have a full team ready by the end of the week,” Kavana said.
Well-known Central sports administrator Ripa Kalamo said Team Central had the potential to become number one in athletics if all stakeholders worked together.
He said Team Central and Team NCD would have problems in some team sports as access to some of the country’s best facilities in Port Moresby would not be available for their use to train for the PNG Games.
“I hope the PNG Sports Foundation and venue trustees can offer the teams some leeway,” Kalamo said.
