Central kings of cricket
The National, Thursday 29th of November, 2012
VALI Albert’s fine knock of 44 runs enabled Central to beat Morobe by 37 runs and win gold at the Keravat country club yesterday.
Central, who were sent in to bat, were all out for 117, with Albert the only batsman who was able to repel the aggressive Morobe bowlers led by Rodney Maha.
Maha, 3-21, was the biggest threat to Central who struggled in the first few overs.
Kila Walo and wicket-keeper/captain Ipi Moea were victims of Morobe’s fine bowling in the opening overs before Albert steered his side to a defendable target.
In reply, Morobe could not match their first innings performance with the bat, all getting out after 20 overs for a paltry 79 runs with Billy Maha (12) and Darryl Tanger (10) the only two batsmen being able to register double figures.
Morobe entered the final after defeating NCD by six wickets on Tuesday while Central beat Milne Bay by eight wickets.
In the bronze medal playoff, NCD crushed Milne Bay by nine wickets with Daniel Kila (36) and Willie Kwara (32) leading them to victory.
Kila belted six 4s and two 6s to lay the platform for Roger Rogama (8 not out) and Seia Ovia (2 not out) to seal the win.
Milne Bay were 9-68 after 20 overs with none of their batsmen making double figures. NCD cruised past the target with 2-90 after 12.4 overs.
