THE 43rd Central Netball Association Championships started yesterday as more than 100 teams assembled at the Rita Flynn Netball Courts for the opening ceremony at 9am, with the first matches being played after midday.
This year’s championships attracted teams from Central’s districts of Abau and Rigo, the sheer number of teams taking part a testament of the enduring popularity of the sport in the province.
Tournament directors Annie Iamo and Diane Kila will have their work cut out for them, as they finalise the draws for matches over the three-day tournament.
Competition will be intense for places in the Central Netball team that will represent the province in the upcoming senior national netball championships in September and the PNG Games in November.
The championships was given a boost of K20,000 from the Central provincial government.
Association president Iammo Launa thanked the provincial government for their support.
