TEAM Central men’s volleyball turned their 2009 Games fortunes around with an impressive three-set victory over Team Eastern Highlands in Pool B on day one of competition.
Coach Tore Iga treated his boys to an easy afternoon yesterday after the comprehensive win.
“Our goal is the gold, so the win is only one step,” Iga said.
His confidence in his formula which includes international Richard Kila and remaining 2009 team members Richard Telo, John Aisa and George Mapai, coupled with the enthusiasm of his young guns was all that he needed.
Central toyed with Western Highlands before winning 25-12, 25-18, 25-20.
The teams in their way before reaching the final are Team NCD, Morobe and Bougainville.
In the other matches New Ireland beat Gulf 3-1 in Pool B, East Sepik downed Hela 3-0 and NCD whipped Cimbu 3-0 in Pool A.
Milne Bay and Bougainville’s Pool C match could not go ahead and Milne Bay ended up playing Northern, winning 3-1. Madang beat Jiwaka 3-1 in the only Pool D match.
