WOMEN in Central province will host a Women Celebration Day to acknowledge the efforts of women in the province and address issues they face in their communities.

This follows the two-day national haus krai initiative which women from the five districts are participating in.

Central province LLG women’s representative Vella Tom told The National yesterday that lack of funding had always hindered their efforts to carry out awareness programmes in the province.

The Women Celebration Day will be held in Abau and is expected to be attended by those living the remote villages as well.

“Women are already mobilising to be part of the celebrations.

“It will be an opportunity to address various issues including violence against women, women in leadership roles and mobilising women to work together in the province,” she said.

Vella also wants more women participation in the planning of the five-year development programme in the province.

“Women are not given the opportunity to be part of the decision-making process in many of the provincial or district development committees and there is no gender equality at these levels.

“We have a better understanding of services required in the community.”
