MESIME village, in Central, will now have access to clean and safe drinking water, courtesy of SP Brewery and the Boroko Rotary Club.

The project was initiated by the villagers with the help of former Kairuku-Hiri MP Paru Aihi and started in March this year, coinciding with World Water Day.

The gravity-feed water project draws water from natural springs down the hill into reservoir tanks to feed taps at strategic locations.

The project was officially opened by Community Development Minister Loujaya Toni at Mesimi yesterday.

Village representative Allan Miri said the project came at the right time with the current growth of the population it is a must for better clean safe drinking water.

“The project was taken in by the people themselves, with the community providing labour,” he said.

SP Brewery general manager Stan Joyce said it was a privilege for the company to help the community.

“A challenge was put out by the board. Previously we were more supportive of sports and social events, but now the company is taking up sustainable projects,” he said

Toni stressed the importance of cooperation between all stakeholders in such projects.

The project cost K160,000 with tanks and polly piping funded by SP Brewery while the Rotary Club provided consultative support.
