Centre closed as officers in quarantine

THE Covid-19 drive-through testing venue at the Taurama Aquatic Center in Port Moresby remained closed yesterday as Defence Force medics who help man it are still undergoing quarantine for routine testing, an official says.
Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the St John Ambulance Matthew Cannon said the centre would resume operation when the soldiers returned.
“The centre had been closed (since Monday) because of the absence of soldiers (medics) who were assisting with the bulk of swabbing,” he said.
He said the testing was organised by the New Zealand Government.
“The (PNG) Government agreed to fund the testing and sampling exercise but the funds have not been released to us,” he said.
Cannon said between 40 and 70 people were swabbed there daily.
The centre started its operation two weeks ago with more than 400 swabs collected so far.
Cannon said earlier testing was only conducted on those who had one or two symptoms of the Covid-19.

  • This initiative of a drive through testing centre is very efficient, more private and user-friendly. I just hope the Government would release the appropriate funds and also more PNGDF medics or other health professionals should be trained and well equipped enough to constantly carry out drive through screenings despite circumstances to hinder the progress.
