Centres to provide for youths
The National, Monday March 31st, 2014
A PLAN to establish youth-friendly centres in the country is being developed by the National Youth Commission.
Commission director of programmes Kia Dama said it was a new concept but similar to women resource centres.
“This concept will be introduced at four levels – national, provincial, district and LLG,” he said.
“The centres will be a place of relief for youth where they can access resources that they are usually unable to obtain.
“There will be a building with accommodation and conference facilities, sport, farming activities, internet services and also referrals by visiting doctors or social workers.”
Dama said such organisations were run by NGOs and churches with no input from the Government.
“NYC has now been given the mandate to implement this through provincial governments,” he said.
“NYC will assist with the design of these organisations and with resources and technical support where necessary but the running of the institutions will be up to the provincial governments.
“As soon as funding is made available through the PSIP/DSIP in each area, we will implement,” he said.
