Chamber: Province feels effect of roadblocks on highway
The National, Friday February 26th, 2016
SOUTHERN Highlands is always the first province to feel the effect of roadblocks in Eastern Highlands, according to its Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Berry Mini.
He told The National that fuel stations in the province were running dry and shops were running low on stock in Mendi town.
Mini, who operates two fuel stations and a hardware house, said the fuel stations were forced to close last week.
“Two other fuel stations in Mendi getting their fuel from Puma Energy are continuing operations, but I do not know how long it will last them,” he said. He said they were waiting for the highway to be reopened so that fuel trucks could reach them.
The Hihglands Highway was blocked at Bena Bridge, Kol Wara in Yonki and Kasam Pass after heavy rain caused flooding and landslides.
Works secretary David Wereh said traffic flow should have been restored by yesterday.
