Chamber welcomes ways to fight crimes

LAE Chamber of Commerce and Industry president John Byrne says business houses welcome any initiative to address criminal activities.
“Investors are happy to invest in safe cities and (in the) growth of employment, youth engagement and activities which make Lae a better city, enhance the city as a progressive, positive business environment,” he told The National.
Byrne thanked Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jr and his team for fighting crime in the city.
They have arrested 63 people since the installation of the two closed-circuit television cameras at the Lae main market.
They were installed by the Chinese community.
“This is the way forward,” he said.
“The statistics are proving the value of such surveillance which is not to observe or track law-abiding citizens but to track and apprehend raskols and opportunists, thereby making Lae a safer place.”
Wagambie Jr said business investments would increase when law and order is in place.
Byrne said the crime rate in Lae can be decreased with good policing and arrest of suspects.
“When people know there is a high risk of being caught, it slows the opportunistic thefts and issues,” he said.
“Our women will also feel safe and have the right to be safe.”
