The PNG Chamber of Mines and Petroleum is working with government stakeholders in sharing plans to protect employees and communities, while continuing operations.
The chamber issued the statement following the Government’s response to the global pandemic, Covid-19.
As an industry representative, the chamber is committed to the national response by the Government.
Operators are ensuring health and safety for their employees, stop the spread of the Covid-19 and keep local communities informed.
“The chamber understands that the welfare of all employees, both national and expatriates, and their families, is of paramount importance to all operators and will work with projects to ensure that industry workers remain healthy and safe,” president Gerea Aopi said.
The chamber thanked major projects such as Ok Tedi, ExxonMobil, Newcrest, Oil Search, K92 Mines, Total and Porgera for implementing their preparedness plans promptly.
“Each of the operators are focusing on containment, welfare of its employees and making sure operations are safe and secure,” Aopi said.
Industry members are communicating regularly with their employees on basic hygiene and information on reducing the risk of contracting or spreading the virus.
Companies are streamlining operations through increasing the number of residential employees and temporarily suspending fly-in/fly-out employees.
