CHAMPIONS QPR Colts are hopeful of Digicel Cup franchises recruiting their players after the side’s National Capital District Governor’s Cup triumph.
After his side’s 14-2 win over Southside Brothers in Sunday’s final, Colts coach Gordon Bal told The National that Digicel Cup scouts were in talks with a number of his players.
“All the Digicel Cup teams that are based in Port Moresby have shown interest in my men,” he said.
“They were already in talks with a number of my players even before the finals.
“(Port Moresby) Vipers scouts have talked to six of our players already.
“They have assured the players of train-and-trial opportunities in the pre-season.
“The Hela Wigmen and Central Dabaris also want talk to our players.
“So I believe most of the team that played in the final will be given an opportunity to join or train with Digicel Cup teams.
“Digicel Cup pair Ben Wemin and Julius Yakopa provided us a boost throughout the tournament.
“But all the players who are likely to be scouted are rookies who haven’t played in the Digicel Cup.”
A Colts player in the last Governor’s Cup, Bal said he was proud of the team’s consistency despite changes in their roster.
“The team that played in 2019 was different,” he said.
“But despite our heartbreaking loss to Border Storm in the final, we still managed to lift the Cup this time with new players.
“These new players have maintained the standard of the team.”
