CAPITAL Rugby Union (CRU) and National Capital District Rugby Union will have to merge to help improve the standard of the code in the country, says an official.
CRU president Kori Chan said during a press conference at Bava Park in Port Moresby on Saturday that the idea of merging the two competitions was still there.
“We need to bring the competitions together for the benefit of the code in Port Moresby and Papua New Guinea,” he said.
“When I look at rugby union in other centres like Lae, Morobe Rugby Union and Lae Rugby Union have been put together.
“Why can’t we do the same in Port Moresby? We have to do it now or otherwise rugby union in the city will go backwards.
“So the intention is there to make both unions work together but it’s a matter of how and when to do it.
“There is nothing to hide, we need to work together for the better.”
Chan said CRU provided a platform for young players.
He said there were sponsors who were ready to support the competition and the code in general.
But Chan said rugby union administrators at all levels had to work together to attract more support for the game.
“These sponsors are interested in the development of rugby union in Port Moresby and the country,” he said.
“I think we just have to get the house in order at the national level which will really help the game from grassroots level up.”
