NEW Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan has called on New Irelanders to protect their forests from foreign exploitation and safe it for future generations.
He made the call during the launch of timber mills under his governments ward level subsidy programme at Malom in the Central LLG on last Thursday.
“My government is giving you this sawmill to help you build your homes and communities but you have given away all your good timber,” Sir Julius told the people with frustration at different occasions at Muliama, Samo and Lipek in the Matalai LLG, Namatanai district on Saturday.
Sir Julius said he did not want the Lihir syndrome spread to other parts of New Ireland.
He did not want people to so reliant on the cash economy instead of working the land.
CEO for government subsidy Mactil Bais said a total of 30 timber mills complete with chainsaws and winches worth K1.3 million have been delivered to 30 council wards since April 2018. Basis said the Konoagil LLG got the largest order of 10 timber mills with having the major remaining tracts of natural forest resources in the province.
The launch of the sawmills compliments other subsidy policies including roof over heads, solar power, free and subsidized education, old aged and disabled pension, wheel barrow and bicycle subsidy.
The two other projects completed by Tasukolak limited company were also launched at Muliama.
