THE office of the Ombudsman Commission is highly politicised and needs to be abolished, New Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan said.
He said the commission was not serving its purpose.
He told parliament that the government would save more than K20 million if the commission was abolished.
He said PNG was the only country in the world to have a body watching over leaders. He does not think it is an important office.
Sir Julius said if the people trusted their leaders, then there was no need for a watchdog.
He said the commission was doing the same work as other government agencies.
Meanwhile, Tari-Pori MP James Marape said the commission was
currently facing problems as there was infighting among senior officers.
He asked Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to sack the officers and replace them with new people to bring back the trust and confidence in that important constitutional office.
