WITH the writs for the general election to be issued in April, the appointment of seasoned and veteran officers to the positions of police commissioner and deputy commissioner is a welcome move, a long-time police chaplain says.
Thomas Kulunga was recently appointed commissioner by the government while former highlands divisional commander Simon Kauba was appointed deputy commissioner operations.
Former police chaplain Richard Setu said criticisms of Kulunga serving past the retirement age of public servants should be disregarded as he had decades of dedicated ser-
vice to the force and deserved to be given the post.
Setu said the two men were veteran officers of the old school and had risen to where they were on merit.
He said the RPNGC needed officers who were competent, especially with the issuance of writs for the election in less than four months, the recent ethnic upheaval in
Lae and bad publicity
surrounding police brutality nationwide.
There was a tussle over the commissioner’s post after the Somare regime appointed Fred Yakasa.
