Checkpoint moves due to bridge construction
MADANG’S Tapo checkpoint which monitors diseases, pest control and illicit activities, will be relocated to Mano to make way for the construction of the Tapo Bridge.
The checkpoint will be about 12km from the Tapo crossing.
An agreement was reached between Kokonas Indastri Koporesen (KIK) management and Mano landowners last Dec 23 in the presence of the police.
Madang-based KIK Stewart Research Station officer Alfred Kembu said upon the agreement signing, landowners were paid 50 per cent upfront for a 40-year land lease agreement.
“It is important that all stakeholders are informed of this project because the checkpoint
is a shared responsibility,” he said.
“The checkpoint has been an ongoing operation but it was suspended temporarily because of the proposed Tapo Bridge construction.
“Now that the land is secured, it will be relocated to Mano.”
Kembu said the checkpoint was an important project funded by the Government to curtail further spread of diseases to neighbouring provinces and throughout Papua New Guinea.
The checkpoint will host proper amenities such as office space and staff houses.
He commended the Ului clan of Mano for their willingness to give up their land for this important project.
Clan spokesman Alex Isogu thanked KIK for considering their land as suitable for such an important exercise which would also benefit them.
“My family and clan members are happy with the payment. But more so we are looking forward to the long term benefits of this new checkpoint,” he said.
Isogu said apart from cocoa production, Mano villagers looked forward to use this opportunity to enhance the small-to-medium enterprises activities.
