Chief Justice welcomes appointment of new acting judge
CHIEF Justice Sir Gibbs Salika has welcomed the appointment of Paul Tusais as an acting judge of the National and Supreme Courts for a period of 12 months.
Justice Tusais was sworn in by Governor-General Grand Chief Sir Bob Dadae in the presence of Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika and Deputy Chief Justice Ambeng Kandakasi.
Justice Sir Gibbs said Justice Tusais had been a lawyer for more than 30 years.
“So he is coming to the bench with a lot of experience both as a defence lawyer with the office of the Public Solicitor and a state prosecutor with the Office of the Public Prosecutor,” Sir Gibbs said. “He is not as young as the others but I think that’s good because (he comes) to the bench with a lot of wisdom and experience which is a necessary virtue for judicial appointments.”
Sir Gibbs said there were currently 38 substantive judges and three acting judges including Justice Tusais, taking total to 41.
“We have a ceiling for 40 substantive judges, excluding the chief justice and deputy chief justice.”
“Many of us have been here for a long time and our age of retirement is coming near so we have to start preparing those who would take our place when we retire.”
Justice Tusais, 54, is from Nelikum village, Maprik in East Sepik.
He has a Masters degree from the Australian National University.

At last God has seen a Gaindu product to be a acting Judge… Frankly,he was a smart English student during his schooling days in Maprik High school. As stated by acting Judge Kandakasi ,he was appointed by merit. Now is the time to appointment beaucrates by merits n not by tribalism, provincialism n regionalism. His appointment becomes the first Maprik to judges circles,Sir Peter Lus made a lot of noise in the Parliament n has gone..
.Thank God for those who have sighted potential in Paul Tusais.
Congratulations Tribesman.
In this time and age. God is putting together his weapons to right the wrong and get back what has been taken by the devil.
God bless PNG!
So confirming “Take Back PNG” from systemic and systematic hidden hands, or ghost, right?
