SOUTHERN Chiefs proved to too strong for Nova on Saturday, beating them 17-10 at Monier Rugby Park to maintain top spot in the Capital Rugby Union competition.

It was former sevens star and classy flyhalf Rutha Omefu who led the Chiefs girls to victory.

Within three minutes, Omefu touched down for a try off a scrum that was contested five metres from their enemy line to take the score to 7-0 with a successful conversion.

Nova responded with flyer Lynette Kwarula’s runaway try from 50 metres to make it 7-5.

It was a much more aggressive second half as Nova returned with the likes of former Palais representatives Patricia Torea, Debbie Kaore and Lydia Korikai adding power to their pack.

Using a staggered defensive line, the Chiefs came back firing with tries from Catherine Rhambu and Pauline Arazi. Both tries were unconverted.

Nova quickly regrouped and played wide to get heavyweight Naomi Alapi through space to score in the dying minute to take score to 17-10 at fulltime.

In other matches, Trukai Harlequins beat Brothers 19-5, while Spartans thrashed Wanderers 68-0.
