CHILDREN attending Buk Bilong Pikinini (BBP) libraries around the country observed World Book Day yesterday.
It was celebration time for young and old as children, parents and staff got into the fun mode.
At 6-Mile, children performed drama to show what they had been taught.
That included what the library termed as “individual, shared and guided reading”.
Parents and other relatives were treated to a show as they watched while their sons and daughters read to them and the community a “big book” they had prepared earlier.
The celebrations further marked the importance of books and libraries in Port Moresby and other parts of the country, BBP official Michael Foster said.
He said it was important for parents or guardians and families to read to their children.
Foster said it was the library’s first celebration to mark the day.
He said there were plans to open another library in Port Moresby’s 9-Mile area because of the increasing number of children.
He said the 6-Mile library had about 300 children visiting every day.
Foster said the library played an important role as a bridge between informal and formal education.
One parent, Lucy Lain, praised the library and staff for their commendable efforts.
She said she was impressed with her four-year-old who had gained a lot from attending the library sessions.
