CHIMBU acting administrator Sebastian Kee hopes a chamber of commerce and industry will function to get better representatives and equally boost the local economy.
“After the general election, we will call a meeting and try to make this committee work,” he said.
Kee said a provincial or town business chamber of commerce and industry functioned as an independent body representative for the business community. “They will take the lead, they will make the decision, they are an independent body, the provincial administration will support because we are the key stakeholders, we are the partners in the economy,” he said.
“These will be representatives from all the business houses to talk about all the business issues and challenges they face and where the provincial government as a government should come and help so these are the main function of the chamber of commerce.” He said some of the challenges businesses faced in the province were proper water supply, road maintenance and law and order issues.
Kee said having an adequate water supply for provincial capital Kundiawa was a priority however no work had been done on it despite having a contract signed between Water PNG and a contractor.
“We are still following up with them (Water PNG and contractor) to start the project,” he said.
“Road maintenance is one area that we need to look at to boost this economy.
“Another is law and order, attitudes of the people of taking law into their own hands, this needs to be addressed collectively” he said.
“If one of these three areas are addressed, it will solve others as well.”
He said political support is needed to boost the local economy.
