Chimbu prepares to thank PM for policy
The National, Friday 02nd March 2012
THERE will be much feasting and merry-making when Prime Minister Peter O’Neill visits Chimbu province – to thank the government for the free-education initiative.
The people of the six districts have contributed foodstuff, pigs and chicken for the feast.
O’Neill will open the tar-sealed Kundiawa-Gembogl road and other development projects.
One of the organisers Jack Upa said the six districts of Chimbu had been gathering foodstuff since last week.
Upa travelled to the districts with the help of the district education advisers.
Parents want to show their appreciation to the government for taking the burden of tuition fees off their shoulders.
Upa said truckloads of food were arriving in Kundiawa from the districts and were being stored at the provincial education office.
He said Chimbu was poor in the sense that it had no fertile land to grow cash crops.
“The province relied heavily on human resources.
“We gather the foodstuff to show the prime minister of our appreciation for the free education policy.
“We thank him from the depth of our heart,” Upa said.
Parent Steven Hume said the policy was a big boost in the promotion of human resource development.
He said parents were feeling relieved.
“The gathering of food-
stuff is just a show of our appreciation,” he said.
