Simbu Soccer Association president Diana Urang and her executives are aiming to bring the game to the districts and communities in an effort to develop football in the province.
Urang said rugby league was the main sport in the Highlands while soccer played second fiddle.
“However, this year we decided to break that tradition by bringing soccer to the districts and communities,” Urang said.
“It’s evident that the interest of soccer in Chimbu has grown dramatically, with presidents of local leagues knocking at my office door seeking technical support, balls and football advice,” Urang said.
“With the interest shown, we have 93 teams participating in the Simbu Soccer Association competition this year.
“We have 20 teams from the Waiye League in Kundiawa/ Gembougl, 28 teams from the Kerowagi League, 25 teams from the Sinasina/Yongomugl League and twenty teams from the Mata Community League.”
Urang said people were supportive of the game.
The Simbu Soccer Association concluded their pre-season competition and are looking forward to kicking off the regular rounds this weekend.
