China is ready to support building of a urology centre at Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) through its medical team, an official says.
Team leader of visiting Chinese urology experts, Dr Huang Minghui, said Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed deep concern for Papua New Guinea’s medical system during his visit last year.
Therefore, he said, the Chinese medical team was helping PMGH set up a minimal invasive urology surgical centre.
Minghui, who is also the Chongquing City director of health, met with Minister for Health and HIV/AIDS Sir Puka Temu yesterday.
Chongquing is responsible for sending Chinese medical teams to PNG on behalf of the Chinese government for 17 consecutive years since 2002. This was the first visit of a director of health from Chongquing.
Minghui said through the medical team, China donated K5 million worth of medical supplies and equipment in the field of urology.
He said the team would have an academic meeting with local doctors and assist in operations at the hospital in an effort to learn from each other.
Minghui said this would enhance the two governments’ relations and more importantly, people-to-people relationships.
He urged the medical team from China to work and serve the local people better.
He said the next project they wanted to work on was a cancer centre for PMGH.
Sir Puka said there was one PNG medical school producing 50 doctors annually, which could not meet the 3.2 per cent growth, hence, Chinese support was important.
