YOUNG inmates at the Bomana prison have been given Christmas gifts by members of the China-PNG Friendship Association.
Association president Michael Lin said the gifts were to remind those in prison that they had not been forgotten.
Lin said it was an initiative of the Chinese people living in PNG to enhance the relationship between the citizens of the two countries.
He said their first visit was in June when they presented musical instruments and sporting equipment worth K15,000.
The gifts included food items and clothing plus Christmas decorations worth more than K30,000.
Lin said the idea was to decorate the prison blocks to make them look more like a home than a prison.
He said they planned to make more visits next year – at least two times per year.
Southern Region Assistant Commissioner Molly Moihau  thanked the Association members for the gifts and urged the prisoners to change their attitude and respect foreigners in the country.
Moihau said the gifts would be distributed among the prisoners in the main compound as they had missed out during the first visit.
Jail commander Michael Mondia appealed to business houses and organisations not to forget the prisoners this Christmas.
