Lae Biscuit Company chairman Ian Chow has offered to sponsor the National Soccer League (NSL) if the Papua New Guinea Football Association and Football Federation of Papua New Guinea join forces.
Chow revealed that when hosting a dinner last Thursday to congratulate NSL champions Toti City Football Club for retaining the title.
Chow said it was the company’s first time to sponsor a club in the PNGFA-sanctioned competition.
“Before sponsoring soccer, I never watched a game of football in my life,” he told the City players.
“But after watching you play, I now know soccer.
“I made an offer to acting PNGFA president John Wesley Gonjuan that if PNGFA and FFPNG can join together next year, the Lae Biscuit Company will sponsor the whole competition.
“You players are special and we will continue sponsor you next year.
“We are planning to establish a Toti City Soccer Academy, and some of you players are going overseas.
“But we will use the rest of you who are still here to go and assist schools.
“We’re here to say thank you to you players for your commitment.
“I know what to do next year. I spoke to the coach about what we plan to do.
“We will make sure not to repeat the 11-0 scoreline (when Team Wellington won in the quarter-final in April) in the OFC Champions League next season.”
Coach Peter Gunemba said it was a privilege to work alongside the Lae Biscuit Company to develop the standard of football in the country.
“We thank chairman Ian Chow, Larry Ori, Harry Kaisa, the management and rest of the employees of the Lae Biscuit Company,” he said.
“We appreciate the support the Chow family has given to the club.
“We can’t say thank you enough for the support they gave us this season.”
