Christians prepare for Palm Sunday
The National, Thursday 21st March, 2013
THIS Sunday in the Christian calendar is Palm Sunday.
According to the Roman Catholic church, Palm Sunday is the sixth and last Sunday in Lent and the first day of the Holy Week.
It recalls the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem riding upon an ass or donkey, when his followers shouted “Hosanna” and scattered palms in his path.
In the Roman Catholic and some Protestant churches, ceremonies of the day are the blessing and distribution of crosses made from palm leaves and the recitation of one of the three synoptic accounts of the Passion.
The Bible reveals that when Jesus entered Jerusalem, the crowds greeted him by waving palm branches and covering his path with palm branches.
Immediately following this great time of celebration in the ministry of Jesus, he begins his journey to the cross.
The biblical account of Palm Sunday can be found in Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-44; and John 12:12-19.
