Church brings education to children in settlement

HUNDREDS of children in a settlement in Port Moresby are being given free elementary education by members of a church.
The Bushwara Foursquare Church teaches more than 30 children from the settlement on week days.
Coordinator Lilly Cletus said many people were moving into the settlement and children needed to be provided elementary education.
Cletus, a teacher by profession, trained another three to help her teach the children. Each class has more than 30 children. The volunteer teachers are Rose Amble, Relllen Joshua, Emie Jackson and Cletus.
“We help the children who cannot afford to attend school elsewhere,” she said.
The children do not pay any fees and the education provided is supported by church offerings and contributions.
She said the population of Bushwara was growing and students were flooding in.
“We would need assistance from the public to set up a classroom,” she said.
Pastor Magi Goro said the church fed children in the settlement every Saturday.
“As the numbers grow, we invite them and teach them basic education in the church. We are into our second year,” he said.
