NOT too many recipients of government funding respond with an acquittal but the Seventh-Day Adventist church at Markham, Morobe, is one of the few that has.
On Wednesday, church representatives presented an acquittal for K100,000 they received from Morobe Governor Luther Wenge in early March during a ground-breaking ceremony.
The ceremony was to mark the start of work on the Markham district SDA headquarters at Ragiampun.
The church justified the expenditure of K89,509.06, which all went towards building materials, with the remaining K10,490.94 for further fundraising.
Monies received from the Morobe provincial coffers have been the only donation the church has received and it still needs about K300,000 to complete the building that will include offices and a convention complex to house up to 30,000 people.
A major fundraising drive will take place at Ragiampun site on Nov 6, with adults members to pay K20 each.
Businesses houses and individuals and the province are welcome to make donations.
Ragiampun is historically where the SDA church first made inroads in the mostly Lutheran population.
The district has 6,000 Sabbath keepers.
Markham district administrator Jerry Wai said with the congregation number still growing and a large number of national meetings being conducted there, it was important that the headquarters be completed and operational.
He thanked Wenge, on behalf of the Markham mission, for the provincial funding.
