A TOTAL of 21 trees were planted at the St Martin parish in Morata, Port Moresby, last Saturday to mark the “season of creation”.
The season is from Sept 1 to Oct 4 each year which brings Christians together to pray and advocate about creation, according to Catholic Bishops Conference Secretary of Communication Fr Ambrose Pereira.
Catholic PNG director Mavis Tito said their participation was to show solidarity with the people of the Amazon in Brazil “as they continue to struggle to preserve their forests from exploitation for economic gains”.
“Tree planting is special and we are not alone.
(We are) doing this in unison with environmental activists, individuals and communities around the world from Pope Francis at the Vatican to the Amazon and to New Zealand,” Tito said.
She said they used to promote tree planting in the past in the dioceses which had active logging operations.
