A CHURCH conference for women this week aims to promote discussions on issues affecting them such as gender-based violence and cancer.
The Evangelical Lutheran church Papua region women’s conference began in Port Moresby yesterday.
Church women’s director Cathy Mui said such gathering would help women become active in addressing violence in their homes.
“We are encouraging them to be more proactive when dealing with domestic violence and cancer,” she said.
“The conference would not only talk about the spiritual aspects but educate the women especially those who were not aware of their rights, safety and health status to be vocal on the issues.”
Chairperson Bubina Zawishardsiameri said she was pleased to see many women attend.
“We need more young girls to join this group and grow in spiritual, social and physical life as well.”
She said the three-day meeting was attended by 130 women from Northern, Alotau, Central and the National Capital District.
She said the church had 17 districts around the country with one each in Papua and New Guinea Islands, and the rest in Mamose and the Highlands.
