Church taking stand to wipe out sorcery beliefs

ENGA Council of Churches is now taking up the challenge of eradicating sorcery beliefs in the minds of people in the province.
Head Bishop of Gut Nius Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea, David Piso, said they would flush out such beliefs in supernatural powers through the power of Jesus Christ.
Piso, who is the chairman of the Enga Council of Churches, said this on Monday at Yapos mission station in Wapenamanda during the closing of a week-long combined churches’ crusade.
He said that sorcery was a belief that came from the devil to weaken the mindsets of people.
“When one is sick, some people go around and said that his or her heart is removed by the sorcerer,” Piso said. “This is not true.
“It psychologically makes people sick and die.”
“I am very sad to see many of our daughters and mothers falsely accused of sorcery.
“They are killed and tortured for no good reason.”
Piso said Enga Council of Churches, under the leadership of Governor Sir Peter Ipatas, would hold crusades in rural areas of the five districts.
He said that all churches in the province were working together to address this issue.
Piso said the next crusade would be held at Minamb Valley in Wapenamanda, and then move on to Kompiam-Ambum and other districts.
