POLICE set up roadblocks in Port Moresby on New Year’s Eve to monitor drunk and unlicenced drivers and unregistered vehicles.
Fourty-seven police officers were stationed at the University of Papua New Guinea roundabout to check vehicles travelling to Gerehu and Waigani.
Gerehu police station commander Chief Sergeant Hohoves Kora said they were supported by officers from the Dog Unit, Criminal Investigation Division and mobile squad.
“Those are the support units helping us to monitor the roadblock,” Kora said.
NCD Police Superintendent Operation Paero Ndranou thanked Port Moresby residents for making police work easier.
“Overall until New Year’s eve, it’s been quiet. It is something I appreciate the public support for,” Paero said.
“Police can only do their job well because of the people and I am hopping it continues.”
