AFTER a month of competition, the Port Moresby Women’s Softball Association (PMSWA) has noted an improvement in matches following the introduction of the “fully loaded” concept.
Association president Ian Soweni told The National that the nature of the new format was well received by all 10 teams since the start of games last month.
“Teams have adapted well over the last four weekends, there are some that want the games to go for five innings,” he said.
“We will not do that because games will be over an hour and some teams are not fully fit and ready to go long innings after not playing since March last year.
“Some teams are training well for the games and you can see changes each week, however, some have not put in the training required and there are still the same basic errors in their game each weekend.
“Notable batters have started hitting the ball better and with the shorter fences, we have started to see more home runs each weekend.
“All clubs except Bears and Gazelle have one team, so the mixture of players in the one team also means inconsistent results over the last four weekends.”
Soweni said statistics for the competition were being recorded each week with a side to be selected for the national championships.
“There are a number of senior players absent this season, so we’re aiming to have a list of names by the end of the month,” he said.
“We will issue adverts for the coaching and management team soon to help us pick the team for the championships.”
