CITY residents turned up in numbers on Wednesday night to witness the official launch of the 2010 Christmas festival in the city.
It was a fun filled night as the skyline was lit up with spectacular fireworks and colourful Christmas lights with children singing Christmas carols in the background at the Jack Pidik Park, 5-Mile.
The festive season was officially launched by NCD Governor Powes Parkop and witnessed by member for Moresby Northeast Andrew Mald and deputy city manager Honk Kiap.
Archbishop for Port Moresby Catholic archdiocese John Ribat was also present to bless the official launching of the 23-day festival.
Ribat said Christ was born in a humble place at a manger and so we should prepare to receive him in our hearts this Christmas.
Parkop invited families to come at their own time to visit the scene and to join in the spirit of Christmas.
He added that we should celebrate real Christmas and not by word of mouth only.
“We should be celebrating in the true spirit that it should be celebrated,” Parkop said.
He urged the city residents to work together with their leaders because leaders could not do things on their own.
He said he could talk about keeping our capital clean and reducing law and order problems but the onus now was on everyone to play their part.
