CRIME in Lae is expected to rise following the mass breakout at Buimo prison on the outskirts of the city last Thursday, Met Supt Anthony Wagambie Jnr says.

“I am anticipating that we will see an increase in the criminal cases in the city,” he told The National.

Wagambie said this after at least 80 inmates forced their way out of jail after over-powering three warders.

Twelve of them were shot dead, 18 were injured and recaptured while 57 are still at large.

It was the second mass breakout at Buimo in less than a year. More than 50 inmates escaped in May last year after taking advantage of the absence of duty warders.
