The active and smart city development programme is making a difference in communities across the city and Papua New Guinea, National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop says.
Speaking at the launch of the programme yesterday, Parkop said no international organisation had inspired city dwellers to embrace healthy lifestyles, voluntary cleaning and community mobilisation other than the programme.
Parkop said participants of the programme not only set the environment ready for the Apec leaders’ summit last November, but also left a mark in the memories of the leaders when they were greeted and welcomed to high standards, a memory which had found a place in their hearts.
“It is a start of another year, start of another progress and a start of us bringing a great year for our programme and more importantly for our capital city,” Parkop said.
“Waking up early is making a commitment not just to our programme, but more importantly to yourself.
“It is good for your own health, fitness and wellness.
“It is good for your own life.
“You are making a commitment to lifting your life, making your life better every day.
“Hagen is now replicating the programme.
“You are inspiring another city, this is the power of our walk.
“This is the benefit of it.”
Parkop commended city dwellers and indigenous people who were walking in harmony and reclaiming the streets.
Meanwhile, Moresby North-East MP John Kaupa says involving youths from the streets in NCD’s active programmes will cut the crime rate in Port Moresby.
Kaupa was at the launch of active and smart city development programme with Parkop, Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’dranou, city manager Bernard Kipit, PNG Defence Force and others.
“I would like to support the programme with the governor, which will bring peace and harmony in the communities and settlements to reduce social problems,” he said.
Youths from Gerehu, Morata, Tokarara, Erima, Boroko, 6-Mile, 9-Mile, ATS Block were part of the launch yesterday.
