COMMUNITIES have walked with National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop yesterday in the lead up to World No Tobacco Day today.
The walk was a practical display for both city residents and walkers of what a fit, healthy, active and tobacco-free life was like.
The Active City Development Programme hosted the walk from Sir Hubert Murray Stadium to Ela Beach, in partnership with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Papua New Guinea Cancer Foundation.
This year’s global theme for World No Tobacco Day is, “Tobacco: Threat to our environment”.
The event at Ela Beach which observed the Coronavirus (Covid-19) safety protocols, aimed to raise public awareness on the dangers of tobacco use for people and the environment and what residents in Port Moresby could do to collectively increase their overall health.
PNG Cancer Foundation’s Tracy Kabewa provided statistics from the Cancer Foundation UK.
She said tobacco killed approximately eight million people worldwide annually.
Kabewa also described how smoking tobacco increased one’s chances of developing cancer.
Parkop encouraged people to stop using tobacco.
He said there were healthier ways to find happiness and reduce stress on the body that everyone should incorporate into their daily routines.
