City set for darts champs

LAE is gearing up to stage the National Darts Club Championships next weekend.
Lae was nominated alternate host of the championships due to ethnic unrest in Madang, the original host.
Papua New Guinea Darts Federation president Nigel Kiaka said the club titles started in 2014 and was normally played during the Easter weekend.
This year’s edition was moved to June to give associations and players enough time to prepare for the championships.
“Our championships for this year is supported by two sponsors and their continued backing is dependent on how things are managed now. We want to remove the perception that darts is an alcohol-associated sport but is a family-orientated event enjoyed by men, women and children,” Kiaka said.
Games would be played at Ascots Club starting Friday week.
“Ascots Club is the current venue where the Morobe Darts Association holds its games and can cater for the tournament.”
Morobe president Yues Dane has been appointed tournament director for the four-day event.
The tournament will consist of four pools playing in a round-robin format: nine games (1 x team,1 x triples, 2 x doubles, 5 x doubles) must be completed before the finals. Hiring of players is not allowed, with the exception of registered members in a qualifying team.
