City vendors appeal for space to sell chickens

A GROUP of vendors who sell live chickens near a drain at a suburb in Port Moresby are calling on National Capital District (NCD) governor Powes Parkop and Moresby North-East MP John Kaupa to provide a space for them to operate.
Spokesman Kondi Tappe said they had been selling their chickens on the roadside for years and needed a proper area to conduct their business.
He said they were not allowed to sell their chickens inside Gordon Market and, instead, sold their chickens at the entrance of the market.
But they had been forced to sell next to a drain since the lockdown.
Tappe said the vendors sell chickens for K30 to K40 per chicken every day.
He said the vendors raised quality chickens feeding and growing them in nurseries before bringing them to the market.
Tappe said selling livestock near a drain was not good for their sales and turned off potential customers.
He said they had no choice but to sell at their current location as they were not allowed by police and authorities to sell closer to the main market.
Meanwhile, Parkop said City Hall had no plans yet for a market to cater for livestock vendors.
“At this stage, our priority is for the vegetable market,” he said.
“Such market to sell live chickens and other poultry products will need a larger space and appropriate facilities.
“Existing markets cannot accommodate them because they deal with live birds and has health issues.” However, the governor
did assure the sellers that he would consider their request after the city completed its development of vegetable markets in the city.

  • City Hall should look at the Live Chicken Vendors plea for space in the markets. This is also farming and they should be able to sell their produce in the city markets.

  • We have no excuse. We have land that is sufficient to do such activities. Why do we request for such avenues. Go back home, cultivate your land and graze your poultry. Noken wastim taim lo ground or place emi no blo you.

  • There is no way to complain. Governer should consider this massage, every citizens has right in SMEs such as livestock. This is Democratic country!!!

  • The bottom line is these vendors contribute positively to our livelihood in the city and the economy of the country thus, the city management do really need to consider their plea. I have observed and they do really need a big place of their own and i like the way the governor is thinking. My only hope is that he and the NCDC management do something soon to help these vendors who contribute positively to this city.
