City-wide checkpoints during festive season

THE Road Transport Authority (RTA) and police are setting up checkpoints around the capital city roads to check on the registration and roadworthiness of vehicles.
Senior Constable Rea Geno of the Boroko Police Station said it was part of the festive season operation.
“(We will be) removing vehicles from the road that are not roadworthy,” he said.
“These include unlicensed taxies, unregistered motor vehicles and vehicles without registration plate numbers.
“We are also on the lookout for drivers without licences or those that have expired licences.
“The checkpoints are also to arrest drunk drivers and drivers who allow their vehicles to be overloaded.”
He said about 20 vehicles were impounded last week.
“RTA officers took the vehicles to the pound at Erima under the Flyover Bridge where they are impounded.”
Geno said the police operation was to ensure a peaceful and trouble-free Christmas.
He warned drivers not to break traffic rules.
“We are working as a team.
“Our duty is to arrest and charge traffic offenders.
“The RTA impounds vehicles.”
