DIGICEL events and sponsorship coordinator Yvonne Igo officially kicked off the inaugural women’s rugby league season in Port Moresby on Saturday.
Igo, stepping in for chief executive officer John Mangos, kicked off the match between Paga Panthers and Dobo Warriors to mark a new era in rugby league for the women.
The kick-off also marked the new ties with Port Moresby women’s rugby league.
Digicel became the proud sponsor of the women’s competition in the nation’s capital by officially presenting a K10,000 cheque to the association.
The sponsorship was well received by officials of the city women’s league and captains of the eight participating.
When receiving the mock cheque at the Digicel headquarters in Port Moresby, women’s league president Elsie Siki said:  “On behalf of the Port Moresby women’s rugby football league, I would like to thank Digicel for the massive sponsorship, which is a major step forward and a boost for our women’s league in Port Moresby. This will be a huge help to the 2011 season and with this support, our women will be encouraged to participate in a once male-dominated sport and further develop themselves.”
Mangos said: “As an equal opportunity to all, Digicel is proud to support women in sports within the country. Even though rugby league is dominantly played by men, women’s participation should be equally supported as well and we are honoured to be part of it.”
Digicel also presented other items such as balls, shirts and caps for the competition.
The weekend women’s games saw Kone Storms forfeited Hawks 20-0, Paga Panthers thrash Magani 24-0 and Sisters proved too strong for Royals 16-4.
