STUDENTS attending four schools in Usino-Bundi district, in Madang, and their teachers now have access to clean water and good sanitation – thanks to two organisations.

Coca Cola Amatil and World Vision last Thursday made the presentation at Dumpu and Sausi villages.

The facilities will benefit 700 students from Dumpu Elementary School, Dumpu Primary School, Sausi Elementary School and Sausi Primary Schools.

The project promotes healthy practices and sustainable and equitable use of clean water and improve sanitation facilities.

World Vision country programme director Curt von Boguslawski said they not only provided the infrastructure but more importantly focus on capacity building in the communities and schools to lead the planning and construction of water systems and sanitation facilities.

“With the community involvement the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene management committees is actively involved in maintaining the sustainability of the project,” Boguslawski said.

He said water from the local spring would be directed through a filtration system and into storage tanks, before it reached the water taps at the schools.

Coca Cola PNG general manager, Manish Chaturvedi said the company globally had been supporting community development.

It has been involved in more than 320 community water projects in 86 countries.

Chaturvedi said nearly one-sixth of the world’s population did not have access to safe drinking water and about 2.6 billion did not have adequate sanitation.
