A HOUSE belonging to Kay Rogerson, the owner of Mondo Clothing, went up in flames yesterday at Hohola in Port Moresby.
Bystanders said opportunists who pretended to help remove possession from the house ran off with some of it.
The only person in the two-storey house during the time of the incident was Rogerson’s mother, Gori Koipori.
A tearful Koipori said she did not know how or where the fire started.
She said she ran out calling for help as soon as she saw smoke coming from the house.
Rogerson’s brother, John Mori, said the fire was likely to have started on the first floor.
“It couldn’t have started from downstairs, because if it did, the whole house would have burnt as the gas is in the kitchen downstairs,” he said.
He said firefighters were quickly called but were held up by a  traffic jam.
Mori called on the national government and the National Capital District Commission to consider increasing funding for the fire service.
Mori said each electorate in NCD should have a fire station available to able to attend to incidents quickly.
The family could not confirm the amount and number of valuables lost.
