The Papua New Guinea Professional Boxing Gym (PNGPBG) is set to host the Oceania Pro-Boxing Championship in Port Moresby this month, according to club president Elvin Wafewa.
“This will be our first international fight and we are prepared to face the fighters from overseas,” Wafewa said. “We are promoting our boxers, as we still lack exposure through media for sponsors to support us.
“The eight-round lightweight bouts will see three PNG boxers facing international fighters.”
Lightweight boxer Junior Raka said he was excited to represent the country at the championship.
“If I win, my belt would be dedicated to the fans and sponsors,” he said.
The five-time lightweight champion said he wanted PNG to step up to the next level of boxing.
Pakistani lightweight fighter and refugee Ezatullah Kakar also pledged to give his title to PNG if he won. “I will play for PNG if I make this successful for myself,” he said.
The championship will be held at the Sir John Guise Indoor Complex on Dec 22.
“We are delighted to have Trophy Haus as our major sponsor,” Wafewa said. “We also thank former Kavieng MP Ben Micah for his supports.”
Tickets are out on sale at all Trophy Haus outlets. Prices are K300 for ringside, K150 for outer ring and K30 for outer stand.
