As part of their fund-raising efforts Netball PNG in partnership with the Metro Bowls Club, hosted the Barefoot Bowls competition on Saturday with 23 teams of four participating in the event.
The eventual winners were Team Nerita 1 consisting of PNG Pepe players who showed great skill and concentration on the bowling green to finish in first place.
In second place was Team Nerita 2, with Credit Corp coming third and in fourth place the Private Companies Netball Competition.
Netball PNG president Julienne Leka-Maliaki thanked the Metro Bowls Club for allowing them to use their venue for the event, stating that it was importance for sporting organisations to build partnerships between themselves.
“What we have seen today is not just about a bowls competition; it’s about networking and meeting our friends again, building partnerships and getting stronger as sportsmen and women.
“This event is very important for us as we prepare to send our national team to the Mini Pacific Games in Vanuatu in the next couple of days. They will spend a couple of days in Brisbane playing some lead-up games before departing for Vanuatu.
“I want to thank all the companies who supported us in this event. It is a fantastic idea and we hope to make it bigger and better next year,” Leka-Maliaki said
Netball PNG will be sending a Pepes team made up mostly of the Under 21 national side. The Mini Pacific Games will be the first senior tournament for most of the players, and will be a vital stepping stone as the Pepes look to the future to bring more young players into the national team.
