Coastal villagers head to the hills

National, Normal

COASTAL villagers in Pari and along Taurama Beach flocked to higher ground with bags of food and clothing after news of the tsunami alert for Papua New Guinea was broadcast on the FM100 news yesterday.
Some of the villagers rushed to schools and pulled their children out of classes.
While warnings were still being aired on FM100 around 10am, villagers gathered their belongings and packed some food before heading for the nearest hills.
Schools in Taurama and Pari, as well as the clinic and stores, were closed for the day and workers, teachers and students were sent home.
