COFFEE parchment buyers in Goroka are expecting to increase the number of parchment coffee bags by 100 percent during the peak season, says buyer Gibson Lovo.
Lovo said they usually buy 40 to 50 bags of parchment coffee during off-season but this would be doubled.
“This month and next month (June) is the peak coffee season where we expect increases in the number of bags we will be buying from coffee growers,” he said.
Lovo has been buying coffee for the past five years and is familiar the trend.
They buy K4.10 per kg. A full bag weighing 50kg costs K250. If 20 buyers get 100 bags each in a day, it is K250,000 circulated in a day.
“We are circulating an average K250,000 in a day,” Lovo said.
“In a five-day week, that’s K1,250,000.
“This is the amount of money going into the coffee growers’ pockets during the peak coffee season.”
The parchment coffee he buys are processed and sold to local coffee exporters in Goroka.
Lovo was a primary school teacher for two years before he joined the police force and served for 25 years.
