Coffee firm strikes deal

ONE of the coffee buyers and processors in Highlands has struck a multi-million kina deal with a coffee importer in Europe.
The Four-Mile Coffee outside Goroka town, on Thursday, sent its first export of 320 bags of green beans under the Wanima Coffee Ltd to Lae port.
The shipment will this week for the Germany-based Hamburg Coffee Company.
Wanima Coffee Export operations manager Benjamin Pupune secured markets in Europe after travelling there while doing his masters in coffee economics and science.
Pupune said the Hamburg Coffee Company proposed to buy 38,000 bags from Wanima Coffee Export every year which would generate more than K18 million annually on the prevailing market price.
“While I was studying in Italy in 2019, I travelled extensively in Europe and established several markets,” he said.
His father’s company will get a 10 to 15 per cent market share of all the PNG coffee exported overseas in the next five to 10 years, he said.
“Wanima Coffee over the past 10 years produced on average 50,000 bags (3,000 tonnes) annually,” he said.
Dad James, the managing director, and his wife Maryanne thanked God for what their son had achieved.
“It was my vision as a major coffee player in the industry to place my mark in the international coffee market after 20 years of hard work, and now I will see that myself,” James said.
Pupune is a former economist for the PNG Coffee Industry and is now the export operations manager of Wanima Coffee Ltd.
